Colour contrast

When a colour is placed on a darker background, it does seem to appears brighter.

Try it below by using your mouse. Left click on one of the coloured squares and drag it over to black area.

The reason the colours seem brighter on a darker backgorund:
The surrounding black area provides a greater contrast to the colour, therefore it appears brighter.
