Colour Therapy Uses Colour Energy
Colour Therapy works with the seven spectrum colours — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Each of these colours is light with a different wavelength, and each carries its own unique energy.
These colours resonate with the body’s seven main energy centres, known as chakras. By working with the light spectrum, Colour Therapy aims to balance and support these energy centres, helping to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.
The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel.” Chakras are often imagined as spinning wheels of energy. Like cogs in a clock, they need to move smoothly for the system to function well. When energy flows freely, we experience greater balance and wellbeing.
Colour can be used to help rebalance these energy “wheels” by applying the appropriate colour to the body. Learn more about the chakras of the body.
Colour and Chakra Connections
- Violet — Crown chakra
- Indigo — Brow (Third Eye) chakra
- Blue — Throat chakra
- Green — Heart chakra
- Yellow — Solar Plexus chakra
- Orange — Sacral chakra
- Red — Base (Root) chakra
Colour is absorbed through the eyes, skin and the body’s energy field (often called the aura). Because every cell needs light energy, colour can influence us on physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
Colour can be applied in several ways, including:

How Colour Therapy Supports Wellbeing
Colour Therapy may support wellbeing on physical, emotional and spiritual levels. Our body, mind and spirit are closely connected, and each influences the others.
From childhood, colour plays a role in how we learn and experience the world. Over time, we attach feelings, memories and meanings to certain colours. Some colours may feel comforting, while others may trigger emotional responses.
Challenging life experiences can sometimes create emotional blocks. For example, difficulty expressing yourself may relate to the throat chakra, which is linked to communication and self-expression. When energy here feels restricted, it may affect overall wellbeing.
Noticing strong colour preferences can provide helpful insights. Working with supportive colours may help release emotional blocks and restore balance.
